Just as each day will surely turn into night, every industrial power drill will eventually require a carbon brush replacement. This, however, is certainly not something to fret over, a brush replacement is quite simple and replacing the brushes in a Makita BDF452 cordless drill only requires a few simple steps before your drill is back in fighting form.
First, because all brushes are not universal, you'll want to ensure you are replacing your old brushes with the correct brush set. The BDF452 requires Makita's 194427-5 brush set. You also want to be certain before you begin any kind of tinkering with the drill, that it is absolutely and in all possible fashions turned "off."

Next, you simply have to locate and remove your brushes. At the rear of your drill there will be a rear cover. This is a dome-shaped piece of the housing (or clamshell) that can be removed without removing the remainder of the tool's housing. Unscrewing the rear cover will directly reveal the brushes. Keep in mind as you dismantle any part of the tool that all things will have to be reassembled. Be focused and organized to ensure you can put all things back together properly.
Beneath the rear cover the brushes will be tucked into their guide sleeves. To remove them you will need a very small pick or hook (a dental-like tool or something similar) to release the brush from the field lead (which in this model is actually a yoke unit but does the same thing). Using that small pick or hook tool, pull back on the spring tensioner to disconnect the brush from the field/yoke and slide the brushes out of the drill.
Prepare the new brushes for insertion and pull back once again on the spring tensioner to install the new brushes. Be cautious to insert them in the same orientation in which the old ones were removed and ensure that they are making complete contact with the armature's commutator bars. Now, simply reverse the dismantling process and put the drill securely back together - this should really only require re-securing the rear cover.
Once all parts are snug and and in their proper places test out the drill's functions to ensure everything is in perfect working order. If all functions are functioning then you have met success with that brush replacement and you are good to go. If, however, all things don't check out so well, re-remove the rear cover to ensure the brushes are fully contacting the armature and that they are oriented properly. If you don't find any mistakes and the drill still doesn't meet your performance expectations, you should take the tool to an authorized Makita repair center for a professional inspection.
